Большинству из нас вряд ли когда-нибудь удастся совершить полёт в космос — зато понаблюдать за повседневной жизнью космонавтов может любой желающий благодаря аккаунту Международной космической станции в инстаграме. На странице @iss можно найти занимательные факты о жизни и работе астронавтов (например, о том, чем они питаются на борту, и как они перемещаются, чтобы друг другу не мешать), интересные моменты из будней станции, селфи, фотографии и видео нашей планеты, снятой из космоса, а также кадры запуска летательных аппаратов в космос.

Аккаунт принадлежит NASA, так что в нём рассказывается в основном о буднях американских астронавтов, а все подписи на английском языке — но понять, что происходит на большинстве видео, можно и без слов.

Happy National Coffee Day! ☕️ #TBT to one year ago today, when Astronaut Kjell Lindgren hand-brewed coffee aboard the space station. The Space Cup isn’t just cool looking, it’s scientific! Astronauts typically drink their coffee through straws in drinking bags. The Space Cup exploits surface tension, wetting conditions and the special geometry of the cup itself to keep the liquid contained, while allowing crew members to sip – and smell – their brew. A capillary connection, almost like the wicking of water through a paper towel, is activated when lips are placed on the rim of the cup, allowing the drinker access to the entire contents. Many of the aspects of our fluid physics research in microgravity are present in this simple cup demonstration — the effects of wetting, the effects of geometry, and the effects of fluid properties, especially surface tension. The results could provide information useful to engineers who design fuel tanks for commercial satellites, for instance. With this cup we can also study complex fluids that we have not previously addressed. #nationalcoffeeday #coffee #space #spacestation #research

Astronauts on the space station are given a standard menu of over 200 approved food and drink items months before launch, allowing them to plan their daily meals far in advance. The Space Food Systems Laboratory at Johnson Space Center has resulted in improved taste, variety and packaging of foods intended for space travel. Nutrition is important to help counteract some of the effects spaceflight have on the body, such as bone and muscle loss, cardiovascular degradation, impairment of immune function, neurovestibular changes and vision changes. Studying heart cells (cardiomyocytes) from Stanford University researchers on space station to understand heart health." #AstroKate 🔬 The Heart Cells investigation studies the human heart, specifically how heart muscle tissue, contracts, grows and changes (gene expression) in microgravity and how those changes vary between subjects. Understanding how heart muscle cells, or cardiomyocytes, change in space improves efforts for studying disease, screening drugs and conducting cell replacement therapy for future space missions. #science #hearthealth #research #NASA #spacestation #ISS #offtheEarthfortheEarth
